Miles, Nelson Appleton
soldier, author, was born Aug. 8, 1839, in Westminster, Mass. He is a noted soldier of the United States army who served as a brigadier-general of volunteers during the civil war. He became a major-general in 1890. He has successfully conducted Indian campaigns, and has on several occasions prevented Indian wars by judicious and humane settlement of difficulties without the use of military power. He is now commander-in-chief of the United States army. He is the author of Personal Recollections.
