Luce, Stephen Bleecker

naval officer, author, was born March 25, 1827, in Albany, N. Y. In 1841 he entered the United States army, and retired as rearadmiral on March 25, 1889. He was commander-in-chief of the North Atlantic station and president of the United States Naval War college of Newport, R. I., of which institution he was the founder. He was commissioner-general to the quadrocentennial of the Columbian exposition, Madrid, and was president of the United States Naval institute. He was also associate editor of Johnson's Universal Encyclopedia; a member of the editorial staff of the Standard Dictionary; and the author of Seamanship, a text-book used at the Naval academy for the past thirty years. He has published under the title of Naval Songs, a collection of original, selected and traditional sea songs, which includes the music; and has contributed extensively to current literature.
