Lowry, Robert
lawyer, jurist, congressman, was born in 1824 in Ireland. In 1843 he moved to Fort Wayne, Ind., and was elected city recorder. In 1852 he was appointed circuit judge to fill a vacancy, and was a candidate for congress in 1866, and also in 1868. In 1860 he was president of the democratic state convention; and was a delegate to the democratic national convention. In 1864 he was elected circuit judge for a term of six years. During 1846-67 he resided in Goshen, and in the latter year returned to Fort Wayne. In 1870 he was elected circuit judge without opposition; and was a delegate to the democratic national convention of 1872. He was appointed judge of the then recently created superior court, and in 1878 was elected to that position for a term of four years. In 1879 was elected the first president of the Indiana State Bar association. He was elected a representative from Indiana to the forty-eighth congress, and was reelected to the forty-ninth congress as a democrat.
