Langston, John Mercer

educator, lawyer, congressman, author, was born Dec. 1.4, 1829, in Louisa Court House, Va.

In 1869 he was elected professor of law in Howard university, and was made dean of the law department. During the last two years of his service he was vice-president and acting president of the university. From 1870 to 1877 he was a member of the board of health of the District of Columbia, and its attorney. He was elected to the fifty-first congress. He is the author of Freedom and Citizenship.

LANGSTROTH, LORENZO LORRAINE, clergyman, inventor, author, was born Dec. 25, 1810, in Philadelphia, Pa. He invented the movable-comb hive, which has come into extensive use; and is the author of The Hive and the Honey-Bee.
