Lane, Joseph
soldier, legislator, congressman, United States senator, was born Dec. 14, 1801, in Buncombe, N. C. He was a member of the legislature of Indiana in 1822, serving in that capacity, with occasional intervals, until 1846. He participated in the war with Mexico; and was appointed a brigadiergeneral. In 1849 he was appointed governor of the territory of Oregon. He was elected a delegate to congress in 1851, where he was retained by his constituents until the admission of Oregon as a state in 1859, when he took his seat as a senator in congress, serving until 1861. He died April 19, 1881, in Oregon.
