Knowles, Freeman
soldier, lawyer, journalist, congressman, was born Oct. 10, 1846, in Harmony, Maine. He enlisted in the sixteenth Maine regiment in 1862, and served three years in the army of the Potomac. In 1886 he moved to Nebraska, and began the publication of the Ceresco Times. He moved to the Black Hills in 1888, and began the publication of the Meade County Times at Tilford; and subsequently he moved his plant to Deadwood, and began the publication of the Evening Independent, a daily paper. He was elected in the state at large to the fifty-fifth congress as a republican.
