King, Rufus – King, Thomas Starr

King, Rufus

lawyer, congressman, United States senator, was born March 24, 1755, in Scarborougn, Maine. He was elected from Newbury, Mass., to the state legislature; and in 1784 was elected a delegate to congress at Trenton.

Moving to New York city in 1778, he was in 1789 elected a senator in gress; and was again elected to the position in 1813, remaining in same conthat capacity until 1825. He died April 29, 1827, in New York city.

King, Rufus

soldier, civil engineer, journalist, was born Jan. 26, 1814, in New York city. He moved to Wisconsin and edited the Milwaukee Sentinel until 1861.

He commanded a division at Fredericksburg, Groveton, Manassas, Yorktown and Fairfax; and resigned in 1863. He died Oct. 13, 1876, in New York city.

King, Rufus

lawyer, author, was born in 1817, in Ohio. He was a prominent lawyer of Cincinnati, and the author of History of Ohio. He died in 1891.

King, Rufus H

banker, congressman, was born in 1784, in Ridgefield, Conn. He was a representative in congress from New York from 1855 to 1857. He was subsequently president of the New York State National bank at Albany; and also of the Albany Insurance company. He died July 9, 1867, in Albany, N. Y.

King, Samuel

artist, was born Jan. 24, 1749, in Newport, R. I. He was an artist of skill in his day, and many specimens of his work are extant, including a portrait of himself, which is now in possession of a descendant. He died Jan. 1, 1820, in Newport, R. I.

author, poet, was born May 2, 1816, in Philadelphia, Pa.

In 1876 he was elected mayor of Philadelphia. ica. For a third of a century he has been laboring to enlarge the scope and usefulness of Cornell college, and to advance He has the interests of its students. He is the author of numerous poems. Among his best known are Faith, Hope and Charity; Birds and Flowers; To Fortune; and other works.

King, Samuel W

governor. He was elected lieutenant-governor of Rhode Island in 1839; soon became the acting governor; and from 1840 to 1843 was governor of the state by election.

King, Thomas Butler

lawyer, state senator, congressman, was born Aug. 27, 1804, in Hampden, Mass. In the years 1832, 1834, 1835, and 1837 he was a member of the Georgia state senate. He was a representative in congress from Georgia from 1839 to 1843; again from 1845 to 1847; and for another term ending with 1849; and in 1859 was elected a senator in the state legislature. He died May 10, 1864, near Waresborough, Ga.

King, Thomas D

soldier, state legislator, was born Sept. 22, 1779, in Duplin county, N. C. He was frequently elected to the legislature, in which he served in both houses. He became major in the forty-third United States infantry in 1813, and remained in the service until peace was declared in 1815. He died Feb. 24, 1854, in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

King, Thomas Starr

clergyman, lecturer, author, was born Dec. 17, 1824, in New York city. He was a unitarian clergyman of Boston in 1845-56, and of San Francisco for the remainder of his life, He was the author of Substance and Show; Christianity and Humanity, with a Memoir by E. P. Whipple; The White Hills, a volume of travel in the White Mountains; and Patriotism, and Other Papers. He died March 4, 1863, in New York city.
