Johnston, Joseph R
lawyer, jurist, state senator, was born Sept. 12, 1840, in North Jackson, Ohio. He served in the civil war for three years, and was second lieutenant in the twenty-fifth Ohio volunteer battery light artillery. For six years he was probate judge of his county; member of the Ohio state senate for four years; and for ten years was common pleas judge of the ninth judicial district of Ohio. a ant; and was subsequently detailed as adjutant of his regiment. In 1870 he was elected a representative in the North Carolina state legislature, and was re-elected in 1872. In 1876 he was elected state senator; and in 1884 was elected a representative from North Carolina to the fortyninth congress; and re-elected to the fiftieth congress as a democrat.
