Jay, William
lawyer, jurist, philanthropist, author, was born June 16, 1789, in New York city. He was son of Chief Justice Jay, and from early life exerted himself in behalf of social and religious reforms. He was for several years president of the American Peace society, and one of the founders of the American Bible society. He was the author of Life of John Jay; War and Peace; and Causes and Consequences of the Mexican War.
He died Oct. 14, 1858, in Bedford, N. Y.
