Huntington, Collis Potter

was born Oct. 22, 1821, in Harwinton, Conn.

In Sacramento he commenced business under the name of C.

P. Huntington, but afterward established the wellknown hardware house of Huntington and Hopkins, which has continued up to the present day. The result of his labors is summed up in the acts of congress of 1862 and 1864, by which the government agreed to give lands and bonds to aid in the construction of the Pacific road. When Col. Scott sought to extend the Texas Pacific to the west coast, Mr.

Huntington rapidly threw the Southern Pacific across the desert wastes of Arizona and New Mexico, met Col. Scott's line east of El Paso and continued building eastwardly until he reached San Antonio.
