lawyer, jurist, congressman, governor, was born Aug. 5, 1811, in Windham, N. Y. In 1836 he was appointed first judge of Niagara county.
He was a representative in congress from 1843 to 1849. In 1849 he was elected comptroller of New York; and in 1850 governor of the state. In 1860 he was tendered the nomination for the office of vice-president, but declined. He was a delegate to the Chicago convention in 1864, and to the Philadelphia national union convention in 1866. He died Feb. 2, 1867, in New York city.
