Holmes, Morrison A
soldier, educator, college president, was born Feb. 6, 1835 , in Augusta, N. Y. He received his education in the public schools, Augusta academy, and at the Whitestown seminary . He entered educational work as a teacher in the public schools of Augustus, N. Y.; and continued in the same profession in 1859, at Stockbridge, Mass.
During the civil war he served as a union soldier in the thirty-seventh regiment Massachusetts volunteer infantry. He then engaged in business for a few years, but subsequently resumed teaching. Since 1886 he has been president of the Avery Normal institute of Charleston, S. C.
