Holmes, John
lawyer, jurist, congressman, United States senator, author, was born in March, 1773, in. Kingston, Mass. He was a member of the Massachusetts legislature in 1802, 1803, and 1812; was a boundary commissioner under the treaty of 1815; and a state senator from 1813 to 1815. He was a representative in congress from Massachusetts, from 1817 to 1820; and was a senator in congress from Maine from 1820 to 1827, and from 1829 to 1833. During a part of 1829, and from 1835 to 1838, he was a member of the Maine legislature. He was United States district attorney, and district judge for Maine from 1841 until his death . He was the author of The Statesman, or Principles of Legislation. He died July 7, 1843, in Portland, Maine.
