Holcombe, Melvin Allen

educator, lawyer, author, was born April 16, 1870, in Maulden, Ky. He received the rudiments of his education in the public schools of his native state; attended the National Normal university of Lebanon, Ohio, and the College of Kentucky. For several years he taught in the public schools; and during 1894-97 was superintendent of public schools for Jackson county, Ky. He has built fifty-four school houses; and is now professor of mathematics in the Berea college.

He was admitted to the bar in 1894; is the author of The History of Jackson County; and has contributed extensively to current literature.

HOLCOMBE, WILLIAM FREDERICK, physician, author, was born in 1827, in Maine. He is a physician of New York city, professor of eye and ear diseases in several medical institutions, and is the author of History of Mount Sterling, Kentucky; History of the Holcombes in America; and Family Records, their Importance and Value. a
