Hobart, Garret A
lawyer, United States senator, vice-president of the United States, was born June 3, 1844, in Monmouth county, N. J. He was city counsel of Paterson, N. J., in 1871; and was elected counsel for the board of chosen free-holders the legislature 1873, and was reelected to the assembly in 1874, and was made speaker in 1876. He was electin ed to the senate in 1879, and in 1881 was elected president of that body, and reelected in 1882. He was nominated for vice-president by the republican national convention, and was duly elected and took the oath of office on March 4, 1897.
