Hiestand, John A
lawyer, journalist, state senator, congressman, was born Oct. 2, 1824, in Lancaster county, Pa. He was elected to the state house of representatives of Pennsylvania as a whig in 1852, 1853, and 1856. He was elected a state senator in 1860, for a term of three years; was a presidential elector in 1864, and was appointed by the electoral college the messenger to carry the vote to Washington. In 1884 he was elected a representative from Pennsylvania to the forty-ninth congress; and was re-elected to the fiftieth congress as a republican.
