Hayne, Robert Young
soldier, governor, lawyer, railroad president, governor, United States senator, was born Nov. 10, 1791, in St. Paul's parish, S. C. In the war of 1812 he held the commission of lieutenant. In 1814 he was elected to the state legislature, and in 1818 speaker, and was also attorney-general of the state. He was elected to the United States senate in 1823, and continued there until 1832. He was elected governor of the state, serving until 1834. He was subwas subsequently mayor of Charleston; and Charleston; president of the Charleston, Louisville and Cincinnati Railroad company. He died . He died Sept. 24, 1839, in Asheville, N.
