Hawthorne, Alice H
poet, was born Nov. 8, 1842, in Louisville, Ky., which city has always been her home. She is the author of a volume of poems entitled Hawthorne Leaves; and has contributed poems and prose to current literature. HAWTHORNE, BENJAMIN JAMES, educator, college president, was born June 19, 1837, in Lunenberg, Va. He graduated from the Randolph Macon college with the degree of A. M., and was a student at Clark university and at Yale. He was a professor in the Collegiate institute of Baton Rouge, La.; has been president of the West Tennessee college; professor in the State Agricultural college of Oregon, and now fills the chair of mental philosophy in the university of Oregon.
