Hawley, John B
soldier, lawyer, congressman, was born Feb. 9, 1831, in Fairfield county, Conn. In 1852 he settled at Rock Island, Ill., and in 1856 was elected state's attorney, serving four years.
In 1861 he entered the volunteer army, and as a captain took an active part in the battles of Forts Henry and Donelson.
In 1865 he was appointed postmaster of Rock Island, and in 1868 was elected a representative from Illinois to the fortyfirst congress. He was re-elected to the two succeeding congresses, and was assistant secretary of the treasury in
