merchant, United States senator, was born Feb. 25, 1809, near Huntsville, Ala. He was a clerk in the war department from 1838 until 1845, acting as secretary of war a portion of the time. He was appointed comptroller of the treasury of Texas in 1867; and was elected a delegate to the constitutional convention in 1868.
