farmer, soldier, politician, was born Feb. 22, 1833, in Brown county, Ill. He commenced life on a Mississippi packet, and soon became first steward. During the civil war he enlisted in the first regiment Minnesota volunteer infantry, and participated in the battles of the Wilderness, Cold Harbor, Deep Bottom, Reams Station, siege of Petersburg, Richmond, and was at the surrender of Lee. He has served several times in the city council of Los Angeles, Cal., and has been greatly instrumental in the advancement of the interests of that city. He was one of the organizers of the people's party; was a delegate to the first state convention; was elected a delegate to the Omaha convention; and at that convention was elected a national committeeman.
