Graves, Virginia
educator, was born Sept. 11, 1848, in Jacksonville, Ill.
In 1869 she received the degree of B. D. from the Iowa State university; and from the same institution the degree of A. B. in 1870, and the degree of A. M. in 1873.
She has attained eminent success in educational work, and for many years has been principal of the Washington high school of her native city. con- GRAVES, WILLIAM JORDAN, gressman, was born in 1805 in Newcastle, Ky. He was a member of the Kentucky legislature from Henry county in 1834; and was a representative in congress from Kentucky from 1835 to 1841. In 1838 he engaged in a duel at Bladensburg, Md., with Jonathan Cilley, in which the latter was killed. He was again a member of the legislature in 1843 from Jefferson county; and was a presidential elector in 1848. He died Sept. 27, 1848, in Louisville, Ky.
