George, James Zachariah

soldier, lawyer, United States senator, was born Oct. 20, 1826, in Monroe county, Ga.

He was a captain in the twentieth regiment of Mississippi volunteers in the confederate states army, afterward a brigadier-general of state troops, and later colonel of the fifth regiment of Mississippi cavalry in the confederate states army. In 1879 he was appointed one of the judges of the supreme court of Mississippi and elected chief justice. He has been United States senator since 1881, his second term expiring in 1899. a
