Gayle, John
lawyer, jurist, congressman, governor, was born Sept. 11, 1792, in Sumter, S. C. In 1817 he was appointed a member of the territorial legislature; and in 1823 was elected judge of the supreme court of the state. In 1829 he was elected to the state legislature, and was speaker of the house. In 1831 he was elected governor, and re-elected in 1833. In 1847 he was elected from Mobile county a representative in congress; and in 1849 was appointed judge of the United States district court of Alabama. He died July 21, 1859, near Mobile, Ala.
