Gaines, John P
soldier, congressman, governor, was born in Walton, Ky. He was a representative in congress from that state from 1847 to 1849; was governor of Oregon territory in 1850-53; and served as a major in the Mexican war as aid to Gen. Scott, and suffered imprisonment. He was a gallant soldier, and did valuable service while on the staff of Gen. Scott. While in congress he advocated numerous measures of importance to his state, and served on several committees. He died in 1858 in Oregon.
