Ewing, Thomas (Lawyer jurist congressman)

lawyer, jurist, congressman, was born Aug. 7, 1829, in Lancaster, Ohio. He removed to Kansas in 1856, and was appointed chief justice of the United States court for that territory. He was a member of the constitutional convention of the new state; and in 1862 entered the union army as a colonel, and was promoted to the rank of major-general in 1864. After the rebellion he settled in Washington, where he practiced law. Returning to Ohio he was a member of the state constitutional convention of 1873; and was elected a representative from Ohio to the forty-fifth and forty-sixth congresses as a democrat.
