Evans, Walter
soldier, lawyer, congressman, was born Sept. 18, 1842, in Barren county, Ky. He entered the union army in 1861 and served throughout the civil war. After the close of the war he was engaged in the practice of law at Hopkinsville, Ky.; was a delegate to the republican national conventions of 1868, 1872, and 1880; and in 1871 was elected a representative in the state legislature.
In 1872 he was elected a state senator. He removed to Louisville; and in 1883 was appointed commissioner of internal revenue in the treasury department at Washington. He was elected to the fifty-fourth and fifty-fifth congresses as a republican.
He was one of the committee that prepared the Dingley tariff bill.
