Edwards, Ninian
lawyer, jurist, governor, United States senator, was born in March, 1775, in Montgomery county, Md. Removing to Kentucky, he was twice elected to the legislature; was appointed a circuit clerk, and subsequently judge of the general court of Kentucky, of the circuit court, of the court of appeals, and finally, chief justice of the state, all before reaching the thirty-second year of his age. In 1809 President Madison appointed him governor ernor of the territory of Illinois, to which office he was three times reappointed. When Illinois became a state he was elected a senator in congress, serving from 1818 to 1824. In 1826 was elected governor of the state of Illinois, which office he filled until 1831.
He died of cholera July 20, 1833, in Belleville, Ill.
