Duer, William
jurist, congressman, was born March 18, 1747, in England. He was appointed colonel of militia; and judge of the county courts. He was a member of the provincial congress, and of the committee of safety; and also a member of the committee to draft the state constitution in the convention of 1777. He was a delegate to the continental congress from 1777 to 1778; secretary of the treasury board until the organization of the department in 1789; a member of the state legislature, and assistant secretary of the treasury under Hamilton, until 1790. He died May 7, 1799, in New York city.
