Downie, David
missionary, author, was born in 1838, in Scotland. He is a baptist missionary to India who has published a History of the Telugu Mission. DOWNING, ANDREW JACKSON, landscape gardener, author, was born Oct. 20, 1815, in Newburg, N. Y. He was a noted horticulturist and landscape gardener of New York, who did much to popularize a knowledge of rural art. He was the author of Theory and Practice of Landscape Gardening; Fruit and Fruit Trees of America; Architecture of Country Houses; Cottage Residences; and Rural Essays. He died Aug. 28, 1852, near Yonkers, N. Y.
