Dickinson, Daniel Stevens

lawyer, jurist, congressman, United States senator, author, was born Sept. 11, 1800, in Goshen, Conn. In 1836 he was elected to the state senate, serving from 1837 to 1840; was judge of the court of errors from 1836 to 1841; and from 1842 to 1844 was president of that court. He was lieutenant-governor and president of the senate. He was a senator in congress from New York from 1844 to 1851. He was a delegate to the Baltimore conventions of 1848 and 1852; and in 1861 was elected attorney-general of the state of New York. He was a delegate to the Baltimore convention of 1864; and in 1865 was appointed United States district attorney for the southern district of New York.

His Speeches and Correspondence, with a biography of him by his brother, appeared in 1867. He died April 12, 1866, in New York city.
