Dawes, Henry Laurens

journalist, lawyer, congressman, United States senator, was born Oct. 30, 1816, in Cummington, Mass. He edited a paper called the Greenfield Gazette; was a member of the legislature of Massachusetts during the years 1848, 1849, and 1852; of the state senate in 1850, and of the state constitutional convention in 1853. He was district attorney for the western district of his native state, from 1853 until elected to the thirty-fifth congress. He was re-elected to the thirty-sixth, thirty-seventh, thirtyeighth, thirty-ninth, fortieth, forty-first, forty-second and forty-third congresses; and was elected a senator in congress for the term commencing in 1875, and was reelected for another term of six years for term ending in 1889.
