Davis, Edmund J
soldier, lawyer, jurist, governor, was born in Florida. He was collector of customs on the Texas frontier, bordering on the Rio Grande, from 1850 to 1852; was a district attorney in 1853 and 1854, and was district judge from 1855 to 1860. In 1861 he entered the union army as colonel; served throughout the civil war, rising to the rank of brigadier-general. After the close of the war he returned to Texas; in 1866 was a member of the first reconstruction convention; was president of the second reconstruction convention, and was governor of Texas from 1870 to 1874.
