He was a famous United States naval officer, made admiral in 1863, who invented the cannon bearing his name, and conducted the siege of Charleston during the civil He was the author of Thirty-Two Pounder Practice for Rangers; System of Boat Armament in the United States Navy; Naval Percussion Locks and Primers; Ordnance Memoranda; Shells and Shell Guns; Memoir of Ulric Dahlgren; and Notes on Maritime International Law.

DAHLGREN, MADELINE VINTON, author, poet, was born in Gallipolis, Ohio. She is the widow of Admiral John A. Dahlgren, of the United States navy, who died in 1870. She accompanied her husband on his cruise in the South Pacific ocean, where he was stationed during the war between Chili and Peru, as commander of the United States squadron in those waters.
