Crosby, John Schuyler

soldier, governor, was born Sept. 19, 1839, in Albany, N. Y. He was appointed a first. lieutenant in the first United States artillery in 1861; and served with gallantry in many of the most important engagements of the civil war. He received a. life-saving medal of the first class, by act of congress, for heroic daring and saving life during the foundering of the yacht Mohawk in 1876. In 1876 he was appointed United States consul at Florence, Italy, and served until 1882, when he was appointed governor of Montana.
