Cothran, James S
soldier, lawyer, jurist, congressman, was born Aug. 8, 1830, in Abbeville county, S. C. He entered the confederate service as a private soldier; and was at the surrender of the army of northern Virginia at Appomattox, having attained to the rank of captain. He was appointed to fill the judgeship of the circuit to fill a vacancy caused by the death of Judge Thomson in 1881; and was elected by the legislature to the same office the following winter, and reelected in 1885. He was elected to the fiftieth and fifty-first congresses as a democrat.
