Corbusier, William Henry

surgeon, ethnologist, was born April 10, 1844, in New York city. He graduated in medicine from the Bellevue hospital and medical college of New York city. During the civil war he served in the field as acting assistant surgeon. He is now surgeon in the United States army, stationed at Fort Monroe, Va. While doing duty on the frontier he wrote vocabularies of the Mojave and Yavapai dialects of the Yuma language; discovered several winter counts, counts back, or calendars among the Dakotas; and studied the symbols, pictographs and sign language of the North American Indians.
