Cooper, James

soldier, lawyer, United States senator, was born May 8, 1810, in Frederick county, Md. He was elected a representative in congress from Pennsylvania in 1838, and re-elected in 1840. In 1843 he was elected to the state legislature, and re-elected in 1844, 1846 and 1848, serving speaker in 1847. In 1848 he was appointed attorney-general of Pennsylvania; and as in 1849 was chosen a senator in congress for the term of six years. He afterwards became a brigadiergeneral in the army. He died March 28, 1863, in Columbus, Ohio.
