Conger, Edwin Hurd
soldier, lawyer, diplomat, congressman, was born March 7, 1843, in Knox county, Ill. He enlisted in 1862 as a private in company I, one hundred and second Illinois volunteer infantry, in which he served until the close of the war, attaining the rank of captain, and receiving from the president the brevet of major for gallant and meritorious conduct in the field. He was elected treasurer of Dallas county in 1877 and re-elected in 1879; was elected state treasurer of Iowa in 1880 and reelected in 1882. He was elected to the forty-ninth, fiftieth and fifty-first congresses as a republican. He was envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary of the United States of America to Brazil, 1890-93; presidential elector at large, Iowa, 1896; and minister to Brazil, 1897.
