Conant, Alban Jasper

artist, archæologist, author, was born Sept. 24, 1821, in Chelsea, Orange county, Vt. He received a thorough education at the Randolph academy of Vermont, and the Goveneur Wesleyan seminary. He was curator of the state university of Missouri through three administrations eight years in all.

He was chairman of the commission to locate and establish the school of Mines and Metallurgy under the congressional land grant; and was the Delegui correspondent for Missouri of the Institution Ethnographi of Paris, France. Mr. Conant is the author of Footprints of Vanished Races in the Mississippi Valley; Archæology of the Mississippi Valley; and other works. As an artist and archæologist he has attained national prominence, and resides in New York city.
