Coffroth, Alexander H

lawyer, legislator, was born May 18, 1828, in Somerset, Pa. He attended the public and the old Somerset academy; then engaged in teaching; and in 1851 was admitted to the bar. In 1862 he was elected to congress and was the youngest member in the house. He received the re-election and declined a third nomination. However, in 1878 he was again sent to congress; and since 1881 has devoted his entire attention to his profession of law in Somerset, Pa. During his career in congress he was known as a true friend for the soldier. He was the warm personal friend of Stanton and Lincoln, and was one of the pallbearers of the murdered president. During the past ten years he has been chairman of the Bar association of Somerset county, Pa.; and as a lawyer Mr. Coffroth is acknowledged one of the strongest men in southern Pennsylvania.
