soldier, legislator, clergyman, was born Aug. 23, 1840, in Homer, N. Y. He entered the civil war as a private in company A, one hundred and forty-eighth regiment New York volunteers, and became first lieutenant, adjutant and captain of the thirty-ninth regiment United States colored troops. In 1887 he was a colonel in the Wisconsin National guard. In 1889 he was a member of the constitutional convention of South Dakota. He has been vice-president of the trustees of the university of Dakota, and president of the board of commissioners of the South Dakota Soldiers' home for eight years. He began ministerial work in La Crosse, Wis., and has filled pastorates in Eau Claire, Chippewa Falls, Mineral Point, Platteville, and Black River Falls. In 1887 he was transferred to Dakota, and is now presiding elder of the methodist episcopal church in the Black Hills conference of Deadwood, S. D. He has been grand chaplain and senior vice-commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, department of South Dakota.
