Chipman, Nathaniel
lawyer, jurist, educator, author, was born Nov. 15, 1752, in Salisbury, Conn. He was professor of law for twenty-eight years in Middlebury college. In 1786 he was elected a judge of the supreme court; in 1789 was chosen chief justice; and in 1791 was appointed judge of the United States district court. He was subsequently again elected chief justice; and from 1797 to 1803 was a member of the United States senate from Vermont. In 1793 he published Sketches of the Principles of Government; and Reports and Dissertations. He died Feb. 13, 1843, in Tinmouth, Vt.
