Clinton, George

soldier, statesman, was born July 26, 1739, in Ulster county, N. Y. He was a member of the colonial assembly, and also of the provincial congress in 1775; was appointed brigadier-general in 1777; and was governor of New York for eighteen years. From 1795 to 1800 he lived in retirement, and was again chosen governor in 1804. He was elected vice-president of the United States during the year 1804, and retained the office until his death. He died April 20, 1812, in Washington, D. C.
