Clifford, Nathan
lawyer, jurist, diplomat, congressman, was born Aug. 18, 1803, in Rumney, N. H. He was elected to the legislature from York county in 1830, and re-elected for three years, during the last two occupying the post of speaker. In 1834 he was appointed attorney-general for the state of Maine; was a representative in congress from 1839 to 1843; and in 1846 was appointed attorney-general of the United States. In 1847 he was appointed commissioner to Mexico; and when peace was declared between this country and Mexico he was appointed minister to that republic. In 1858 he was appointed an associate justice of the supreme court of the United States. He published United States Court Reports.
He died July 25, 1881, in Cornish, Maine.
