Clark, George Rogers

soldier, was born Nov. 19, 1752, in Albemarle county, Va. He was one of the earliest surveyors in Kentucky, where the frequent conflicts with the Indians gave him an experience of the value to and his people. He grew to be recognized as the protector of all the settlements in Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and a greatest himself terror to the redmen. In 1776 he was appointed major of militia, and was chosen a delegate to the Virginia convention. In 1777 was promoted to lieutenant-colonel; and in 1781 was commissioned brigadiergeneral of the continental army. He died Feb. 18, 1818, in Louisville, Ky.
