Chandler, Zachariah

statesman, was born Dec. 10, 1813, in Bedford, N. H.

He was mayor of Detroit, Mich., in 1851; was elected a senator in congress, from Michigan, to succeed Senator Cass, taking his seat in the thirty-fifth congress; and was re-elected to the senate in 1863, for the term ending in 1.869. He was also a delegate to the Philadelphia loyalists' convention of 1866; and re-elected to the senate for the term ending in 1875. In 1875 he was appointed secretary of the interior; served in that capacity until March, 1877; and in 1879 was elected United States senator, to fill a vacancy.

He died Nov. 1, 1879, in Chicago, Ill.
