Capen, James A
poet, was born Jan. 3, 1840, in Boston, Mass. In 1861 he moved from his eastern home to the Rocky mountains in Colorado, and subsequently secured position in the United States mail service, running between Denver and Leavenworth, Kan.
He served through the war, enlisting in the seventh Kansas volunteer cavalry, and serving as volunteer soldier a four years and four days. He then settled in Missouri, where he still resides, in Sedalia. He has taught school for twenty years; and is now serving as quartermaster of Gen. George R. Smith Post No. 53, Department of Missouri, G. A. R.; and is assessor of his county. He is the author of some very fine poems; and as an elocutionist he has become well known in his adopted state.
