Cambreleng, Churchill C
merchant, diplomat, congressman, was born in 1786 in Washington, N. C. At an early day he engaged in mercantile pursuits with John Jacob Astor, and traveled extensively over the world. He was a representative in congress from New York from 1821 to 1839, and in 1840 was appointed minister plenipotentiary to Russia; his reports and political pamphlets were at one time very numerous, one of the former, on commerce and navigation, having gone through several editions and been republished in London. He died April 30, 1862, at West Neck, L. I.
