Calhoun, John Caldwell

vicepresident of the United States, author, was born March 18, 1782, in Abbeville District, S. C. He was a South Carolina statesman who was secretary of state under Monroe, and again under Ty-- ler; vice-president under John Quincy Adams, and United States senator from: 1845 till his death.

He was one of the ablest of political leaders, a great orator, and a political thinker of the first. rank. His literary style is both vigorous and concise, and displays at times a remarkable intensity of expression. He was the author of A Disquisition on Government; and The Constitution and Government of the United States. He died March 31, 1850, in Washington, D. C.
